Registration for placement testing for Spring Term is now open! Register for a test.
Placement Testing for Summer and Fall terms will start Week 5 (4/29/2013). Registration for placement testing will open Week 4 (4/22/2013).
You will take the Standard Math Placement Test if:
- Your SAT-Math score is 540 or below (ACT-Math 24 or below) and you believe that you have been placed incorrectly or,
- You do not have SAT or ACT scores.
The purpose of the test is to place you in the most suitable course on the basis of what you actually know, at least with a little review. If you have taken a course, but you cannot remember the content very well even with some review, then you should retake that material before proceding on to the next course. We recommend that you use the sample test below as a guide to material to review before taking the placement test.
You will be allowed 50 minutes for the test, and you can divide that time among the various parts however you wish. A calculator is not needed to answer any of the questions, but if you bring one then you may use it. The actual test that you will take will be in multiple-choice format.
The test itself is broken into four parts, and your placement will be determined by your scores on one or more parts of it.
- Placement in MATH 105/106/107 (University Mathematics I, II, III), MATH 111 (College Algebra), MATH 211 (Math for Elementary Education), or MATH 243 (Intro. to Probability & Statistics) depends on satisfactory scores in both Parts A and B.
- Placement in MATH 112 (Elementary Functions) or MATH 241 (Calculus for Business and Social Science) depends on satisfactory scores in each of Parts A, B and C.
- Placement in MATH 231 (Discrete Mathematics), MATH 246 (Calculus for the Biological Sciences), or MATH 251 (Calculus) is based on the scores in all four parts, A, B, C and D. To be eligible for MATH 251 you must also have taken either MATH 112 or high school trigonometry within the past 3 years.
