Academic English for International Students (AEIS) is an academic curriculum that helps international students develop their English while studying at the University of Oregon. AEIS is required for students whose TOEFL iBT is 87 or below or IELTS is 6.5 or below.
International students with lower TOEFL and IELTS scores will take the placement test once to identify which AEIS courses they should take. They are not able to retake the assessment.
What is the format of the AEIS placement test?
- Writing. Students write an essay in thirty minutes.
- Listening, Language Use, and Reading Comprehension. Each of these tests consist of twenty questions. None of these sections has a time limit, so the amount of time required varies from student to student. Most students take two to three hours to complete the entire placement.
When and where can I take the AEIS placement test?
Once you are admitted to the university, you will receive an email with information about taking the AEIS placement test online. It is best to take the placement as soon as possible to be ready for course registration.
The AEIS placement test is administered using a virtual remote proctoring service which allows students to take the test in their home, or other quiet, distraction-free location, using their own computer, headphones or earbuds with microphone, and a web cam.
The test costs $45 and will be charged to the student’s UO account.
More information about AEIS placement testing and exemptions can be found at https://aei.uoregon.edu/programs/undergraduate/placement-testing or by emailing aeisinfo@uoregon.edu.
