College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Second Language (L2) Proficiency Requirement

To graduate with a bachelor of arts degree, University of Oregon students need to demonstrate competency in a language other than English. As specified in the UO catalog, students may meet this graduation requirement for the degree through coursework or in other ways, with or without credits from the UO.

CAS has designed an interactive website to help students determine the best way to meet the language proficiency requirement: https://languagerequirement.uoregon.edu.

Scores for the language assessments are valid for two years and it is the student’s responsibility to ensure the scores have been received by the university and that the second language requirement has been cleared.

Many of the language assessments listed can be proctored at the University Testing Center, and most have options available for remote testing. The Testing Center can help you set up a remote test.

Oral, written, or reading assessments do not meet the language requirement on their own. Students wishing to test out of the language requirement will need to show proficiency via oral, reading, and writing assessments or they may work with CAS to meet the requirements.

If you have any questions about the various language assessments available, please contact the University Testing Center. Specific questions about the language requirement are best answered by the College of Arts and Sciences.
