Students must complete two terms of writing to receive their degree. They can satisfy the writing requirement by completing WR 121 and either WR 122 or 123.
Students with advanced writing skills may challenge the requirement by taking a waiver exam during the first week of the fall, winter, and spring terms.
Some exam scores may allow students to waive the WR 121 requirement. The tests included are:
- SAT — CR
- ACT — English
- AP
- IB English
To understand WR 121 exemption possibilities, students should refer to the Composition Program's information on standardized test scores and exemptions for writing courses.
Transfer students who have completed writing courses elsewhere should consult the Office of the Registrar for more information.
Students whose first language is not English should consult the American English Institute (AEI) to understand writing course placements. AEI partners with the Testing Center during registration to ensure students take Accuplacer placement tests to help with writing course registration.
We recommend that students complete AEIS courses before taking WR 121, because developing writing skills in AEIS courses will prepare students for success in WR 121 and other courses.
