College Admission Tests

University Placement Tests

Placements tests are designed to help students register for the best course to continue their studies in a field without having to go back to introductory courses. Advisors use placement results to guide the student with course selection. Placement tests do not grant any credits.

Who needs to take a placement test?

  • Math: Almost every student will need to take the math placement. Students that have transferred in math credit from another institution may not need to do so but should discuss with their advisor to ensure they will be able to register for courses. Students who do not intend to take math courses in their first year of study may want to wait to take the math placement as well. Learn more about ALEKS PPL.
  • Chemistry: The Chemistry placement is only needed if you plan to register for CH 221 or CH 224H. No placement is needed to register for CH 111. If you already have credit for CH 221z (typically through AP or IB, or transfer credit from another college), then you do not have to take the placement.  Please meet with an advisor to determine your initial chemistry course. Learn more about chemistry placement.
  • Languages: Students only need to take a language placement if they have prior experience in that language and intend on registering for additional courses. If you have no prior experience with a language or do not plan on taking a course in that language, then you do not need to take that language placement. Only take a language placement if you intend to register for a language course and have prior experience. Learn more about language placement.
  • Writing: There is no writing placement at the University of Oregon. There is a Writing Waiver which can exempt a student from taking the required WR 121/122 courses. This is only if the student feels they can demonstrate that they are proficient in the learning outcomes for WR 121Z or WR 122Z. It is not required to take the Writing Waiver. Learn more about writing requirement and exemptions.

Language Proficiency

The University Testing Center works with several different language assessment providers to offer different testing options. These assessments are often used to meet the UO’s BA Second Language graduation requirement but are also taken for other reasons.

Graduate Tests

Common tests for Graduate Students include the GMAT, GRE, and MCAT. While these tests are useful for University of Oregon students, the UO Testing Center is not currently an approved test site for the exams.

Nontraditional Credits

Some tests help students receive college credit for learning done outside of the traditional classroom.

Licensure and Certification

The University Testing Center works with a variety of professional testing companies to provide certification and licensure exams. Some of the companies we work with include PearsonVUE, ETS, Prometric, Meazure Learning, ISO Quality-Testing, Kryterion, TD Testing, PAN, Oregon Building Codes Division, and Oregon Department of Agriculture. Individuals can register for our current available tests online.
