College Level Exam Program (CLEP)

The CLEP exams are a set of nationally standardized exams, available in different subject areas. They are used to waive classes while earning college credit. CLEP exams are accepted for credit at over 2,800 colleges and universities, including the University of Oregon. The academic departments that allow the examinations also determine the scores required to receive college credit. Each university or college decides CLEP passing scores and equivalencies so students should check with their individual institutions before taking the test.

Registering for a CLEP is a two-step process:

  1. Register and pay for the test through the CLEP online portal. List the UO as your CLEP exam location. Print a registration ticket to present to the UTC as proof of payment. The ticket will include a Ticket ID and a Voucher ID to check-in for your appointment.
  2. Register and pay the fee to take the test at the UO Testing Center.

CLEP credits count toward graduation but do not count as residence credits at the UO. The University of Oregon does not award credit for General Examinations. For detailed information about which CLEP exams are accepted by the University of Oregon and the credit that can be awarded, review Courses Awarded for CLEP Exams on the Registrar’s Office website.

The CLEP program has a year-long free test prep option. Students can order study materials on individual CLEP tests. Students may also learn more bout CLEP exams and which topics are covered by visiting the College Board Website.
