Bridges Oregon’s National Sign Language Assessment (NSLA) uses the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) conducted in American Sign Language (ASL) to get the best sample of a candidate’s ASL skills. The NSLA SLPI:ASL assesses a person’s skills in using natural sign language for communication (function) and provides an analysis of a person’s sign language vocabulary, production, fluency, grammar, and comprehension skills (form). This assessment is most often used to assess ASL interpreters.
The SLPI may be used to meet the BA second language requirement, but for results to be accepted you will need to take the assessment at the University Testing Center. Bridges Oregon has a release form on their website must be completed so test results can be sent to the UO Testing Center. The STAMP ASL is available as another option to meet the BA second language requirement in ASL.
Steps to Register for the SLPI
- Make tentative appointments with the UO Testing Center. This assessment requires us to reserve a private room ahead of time. We will create three tentative appointment dates and times. You will use these tentative appointment times when registering with Bridges Oregon.
- Register and pay for the SLPI with on the Bridges Oregon website. Review all policies, especially about cancellation, late arrival, and refunds. When signing up, use the three tentative appointments you set up with the UO Testing Center as your preferred dates and times.

When registering for the SLPI there are two options with different fees on the Bridges Oregon website. The UO only requires the results report with no diagnostic feedback. You may purchase the more expensive full report with diagnostic feedback for yourself, but it is not required.
You may pay the $15 proctoring fee beforehand or on the day of the assessment.
Bring a valid photo identification on the day of the test.
A score of Intermediate Plus or above on the SLPI will satisfy the BA second language requirement.
